Colombo, Feb 10 (Daily Mirror) - Police at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) thwarted an attempt to smuggle in a stock of illicit cigarettes worth over Rs. 4.5 million last night and took an inbound passenger returning from Dubai into custody.
The Police Narcotic Bureau (PNB) officials stationed at the BIA Arrival Terminal searched a passenger on suspicion and found the contraband in his baggage.
The suspect, identified to be a 24-year-old resident of the Maligawatta area, had arrived on FlyDubai flight FZ 652 around 7.30 pm on Sunday.
Police found 150 cartons of a brand of cigarettes containing 30,000 sticks, the sale of which is prohibited in Sri Lanka. The suspect has been ordered to appear before the Negombo Magistrate on Thursday.
