Red warning issued for fishermen as strong winds lash sea areas



Colombo, June 9 (Daily Mirror) - The Department of Meteorology has issued an urgent Red Warning for the maritime and fishing community, warning that wind speeds could increase up to 70 kmph in sea areas off the coast from Kankesanthurai to Kalpitiya via Mannar.

Accordingly, fishermen and those engaged in marine activities have been advised not to venture into these sea areas until further notice.

According to the department, wind speeds in the affected sea areas may increase to 60–70 kmph at times, resulting in very rough sea conditions.

Meanwhile, wind speeds of 50–60 kmph are expected at times in sea areas off the coast from Trincomalee to Kankesanthurai via Mullaitivu, and from Kalpitiya to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota. These sea areas are also expected to be rough at times.

The Meteorology Department further warned that wave heights could increase to about 2.0–2.5 metres in sea areas off the coast from Mannar to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota.

The department urged coastal residents, fishermen and those involved in marine activities to remain vigilant and pay close attention to future weather advisories.
