Principals’ starting salaries revised; Promotion relief granted

Colombo, June 9 (Daily Mirror) - The starting salary of officers in the Sri Lanka Principals’ Service has been revised following Cabinet approval, the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education announced.

The ministry has issued a new Circular No. 03/2014 (I), replacing Section 01 and its sub-sections of the previous Circular 03/2014. The revisions were approved by the Cabinet at its meeting on May 11, 2026, and have been introduced in line with the Establishments Code.

Under the new circular, salaries of principals will be calculated as a promotion, addressing a long-standing salary issue raised by principals over several years.

The ministry also announced a special grace period for officers recruited to Grade III of the Sri Lanka Principals’ Service to meet the qualifications required for promotions up to Grade I.

The grace period has been granted with the approval of the Public Service Commission to help resolve practical difficulties faced by principals in the promotion process.

Accordingly, principals have been given until December 31, 2027, to fulfil the qualifications required for promotion.
