President intends to reduce members of LG bodies from 8000 to 4000

Prior to the next election, President Ranil Wickremesinghe said that he intends to reduce the number of council members for local government bodies (Pradeshiya Sabhas, Municipal Councils, Urban Councils) from 8000 to 4000 and also implement the Jana Sabha program, President’s office said.

The executive power of the Pradeshiya Sabhas should be given to a chairman-based committee instead of a single chairman and draft laws will be prepared to incorporate these amendments prior to the next local government elections, the President said.

Reducing active paid politicians is good to hear about. There's too much excess and waste done even by the Colombo Mayoress, who was blocking the Dance party at the Lotus Tower even. Too much money and power gone to the heads of the various 8000 council members.

Reducing the Chairman and Mayors powers by making the role committee based should also curtail the individuals corrupt behaviours... Have to see how Ranil can make it happen, depending on how the SLPP which Mahinda says he is completely depends on views the cutting of the 4000 paid politician places. The saving will be far greater than the 4000 positions, allowances including for supporting staff.

Excellent hit on the SJB, which only in the last month was needlessly agitating for local government elections. So much waste with the jumbo sized total of council members. Their 8000 total outnumbers our total elephants even. Now everything will have to be re-jigged, and it will take a long time. Main interest is how the SLPP reacts if they weren't already aware about this good tactic to both improve the future local government bodies and delay needless election activity!

The usual practice of taking time is to be implemented. The Local government election is over due and must be held, on the proportional rate system without delay, to reduce the numbers as the required amendment can be done in the parliament including for limiting the political funds, in a matter of month. Same must be applied for the Provincial Council elections which are well over due. There after new adjustments can be discussed and approve. No referendums required as there are people without food.

For the last 75 years, the land has not bulged. The population has gone up. More Govt. servants are needed, because of work load. But the number of MPs has more than doubled, so has the local Govt. bodies. What is the role of these MPs and VC/MC/PC men in serving citizen? They have only become a burden to the Treasury and the society. I am not talking of the caliber of this privileged group! Do we need so much of them ? What is their contribution to the development of Sri Lanka in spite of benefits showered in abundance? We are breeding a new caste that thrive on bribe, fraud and crime. Please cut them to size.

Why only local government bodies and members? Why not reduce the number of politicians from 225 to about 75-100. For a small country like SL, why do we have so many politicians and so many Ministers most of whom are utterly useless and corrupt. If you do that, that will be a real visionary, courageous and a great move. You won't do it because you were elected by them.

Excellent step! In our area the elected member is a 3 wheeler owner who also operates 3 vegetable stalls on the pavement! There is another one who's main business is construction of illegal structures and extensions. No decent person will win elections and also no decent person is willing to sit on the same discussion table with such characters.

First of all reduce the number of brainless morons in the house at Diyawannawa. Then reduce the numbers of pea-brained morons you have appointed as ministers and state ministers by 75%. So far, hardly anything worthwhile has been achieved by your rule and the sufferings of the people have increased many folds.

Why 4000, sure the number was doubled by parliament some time ago, but why stop the reduction at 4000. Why not reduce to 3000. How many extra paid politician positions will be created in local government by the Jana Sahbas, an extra 4000 perhaps? How many money wasting/economic crimes will be done with these Jana Sahbas?

Most of the local bodies within a PS/UC-MC/PC structure is no more necessary now, as most of the districts and towns have access to highways and infrastructure for easy and speedy travel to main centers to carry out their work, and due to internet connectivity and high mobile usage.

Ranil's idea of reducing the members of LG Bodies is good. But he is suggesting this not for implementation, but as a ruse to postpone holding Elections. The results of any Election is clear to him.
