No rise in prices of demerit goods from this budget: Excise Chief



Colombo, Feb 17 (Daily Mirror) - The prices of much talked about demerit goods of economy, alcohol and tobacco will not be raised from this budget as anticipated by potential consumers, Chief of the Excise Department told the Daily Mirror. 

The Excise Chief said the prices of all alcoholic beverages and cigarettes have been increased in early January this year from the revised Excise duty and they will not be amended again from the budget. 

The Excise Notice 1/2025 issued on January 11 had instructed to increase Excise taxes by 6% per litre of liquor and Rs. 5 to Rs. 10 for a stick of locally manufactured cigarettes. 

Excise Commissioner General U.L. Udaya Kumara Perera said this while attending a programme to present appointment letters to Excise Guards and Drivers held at the Excise Department Head Office at Rajagiriya. 

Additional Excise Commissioner General Rohana Senarathna with Deputy Excise Commissioners Roshan Perera and Kapila Wijesinghe also took part in the event.
