Acting Skipper Kusal Mendis smashed a sparkling century as Sri Lanka piled up a formidable 294 runs in their second World Cup warm-up fixture against Afghanistan played at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati, India today.
The 28-year-old dashing right-hander, leading the side in the absence of regular Skipper Dasun Shanaka, plundered a magnificent 158 from 87 balls before he retired out having hoisted nine sixes and struck 19 boundaries.
Sri Lanka, of course, suffered an early setback as they lost opener Dimuth Karunaratne in the sixth over with just 30 runs on the board after Afghanistan had won the toss and elected to field first.
Mendis joined opener Pathum Nissanka and the pair steadied the innings with a second-wicket stand of 52 runs from six overs as Sri Lanka looked to bounce back following a demoralising defeat at the hands of Bangladesh on Friday.
But after the departure of Mendis, the Sri Lanka innings suffered a middle and late order collapse and lost their last seven wickets for the addition of 54 runs.
Earlier, Sri Lanka Skipper Dasun Shanaka was ruled out from the warm-up game as the all-rounder is still recovering from a 'strain' he experienced on his left elbow during the previous match against Bangladesh.
However, Shanaka is under medical treatment and is in the process of recovery.
Meanwhile, Kusal Janith Perera, who experienced pain on his 'right shoulder', during Sri Lanka's warm-up game against Bangladesh, is currently under medical treatment and is in the process of recovery.
In addition, Maheesh Theekshana, who did not travel with the team to India on September 26, will join the squad on October 4, 2023. (Agencies)

What a vengeance for The Afghans and Bangalis! Afghans failed narrowly in the Asia Cup. Bangalis too were beaten. These two matches could be warm-ups but how are they going to cope against the 9 Nations in the World Cup kick starting on 5th October 2023. Tough ask but let's join hands together and support our Sri Lanka. Excluding former captains Angelo Mathews and Dinesh Chandimal could be a minus point/costly blunder. Angelo can bat at the same time can be handy with the ball. Chandi could put havoc on the opposition. This is World Cup and not a normal tournament. Let's wait and see!

The result shows how comfortable this score was.

Need to get a good foreign batting coach as we have a serious batting issue. Only 50 odd scored and lost 8 wickets. Do not allow a cunning person like mahela to get involved with slc.

Dananjaya also same like Dasun. Just balling allrounders not batting allrounders without any match reading skills. Same for Wellalage. So these guys should be considered as number 7 or lower slots not anything above that.

Skills and on field performance are the key to win modern day ODI whatever players age 19 or 35 not the names of the players or whatever they did in past. Sri Lankan coaching staff and consultants, selectors, administration must rethink about bringing new players to side after this world cup and need to restructuring of competitive domestic cricket tournaments similar to English County Cricket and need to choose good, small number of skillful coaching staff suit to modern game for all formats in permanent base. As opinion now, Sri Lankan team hasn't nothing to lost therefore they have to play game by game as performance base plan to search wining moment. Positive performance can lead at least fourth place. Can Sri Lankan team do this miracle this time? Let see.
