Colombo, April 21 (Daily Mirror) - Amid ongoing moves to reduce cash handling on expressways, the Road Development Authority (RDA) is preparing to introduce a new toll collection system known as Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF), RDA Director General Anuradha Hettiarachchi said.
Speaking to the media, he said the system will be introduced alongside the existing Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) system, raising questions over a dual-operating structure during the transition period.
The MLFF system is a barrier-free electronic tolling mechanism that allows vehicles to pass through toll points without stopping or slowing down. It replaces traditional toll booths and boom barriers with overhead gantries equipped with automated tracking technology.
In line with systems already in use in several countries, the MLFF model will automatically deduct toll charges from vehicle owners’ bank accounts after using expressways, based on number plate recognition.
However, the RDA also said that toll payments can still be made using credit or debit cards, at least during the initial phase of implementation, leaving uncertainty over how long cash-based and hybrid payment options will remain in place.
