Kolonnawa and Muthurajawela refineries stop work over bill being taken up in Parliament



All activities, including fuel distribution, from the Kolonnawa and Muthurajawela refineries, had been suspended in protest against a bill being taken up in Parliament today (18), the Employees' Union of Petroleum Corporation said.

While addressing the media the Trade Union's President Ashoka Ranwala, said, the Petroleum Special Provisions Act Amendment, which is expected to pave the way for the liberalization of the petroleum industry, is scheduled to be debated in Parliament today.

Therefore, the trade unions have decided to refrain from all services, including fuel distribution, and applying for medical leave. 

“We will continue with our trade union action not for the sake of our services but all the people in the country,” he said.

Power and Energy Minister Ranwala and the Cabinet of Ministers should take responsibility for the disruption, he said. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
