All activities, including fuel distribution, from the Kolonnawa and Muthurajawela refineries, had been suspended in protest against a bill being taken up in Parliament today (18), the Employees' Union of Petroleum Corporation said.

While addressing the media the Trade Union's President Ashoka Ranwala, said, the Petroleum Special Provisions Act Amendment, which is expected to pave the way for the liberalization of the petroleum industry, is scheduled to be debated in Parliament today.

Therefore, the trade unions have decided to refrain from all services, including fuel distribution, and applying for medical leave.

“We will continue with our trade union action not for the sake of our services but all the people in the country,” he said.

Power and Energy Minister Ranwala and the Cabinet of Ministers should take responsibility for the disruption, he said. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)

A liberalization or privatization of the petroleum industry is long overdue and must finally be implemented. However, that does not give the crooked government the right to violate the constitutional rights of unions.

Useless state parasites, not just in this organization. All of them are free loaders and the one of the root causes of the state of the country. Can't blame them for taking highly paid jobs where they don't have to do anything however. Former Ministers need to take responsibility for that. Current one's need to rectify it.

Show us a single State run organization that runs at a profit, for the public money invested in them! Every one of them assume and behave that they are Govt. servants. Every time a new Govt. assumes power, they dump a horde of new workers, whether there is need or not. Result is overstaff. How can you think of profit? "The trade union action Is not for the sake of their services but all the people in the country" - what a load of crap by the union when it is obvious that it is all about them. Privatise the whole thing lock, stock and barrel. Let's compare staff salaries and allowances after that. We will then know the real reason why they choose to resist this move.
