Jayakody’s resignation too late, says Namal

While criticising the resignation of Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody, Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) National Organiser Namal Rajapaksa said the move comes far too late, despite it being accepted.

In a statement posted on X, Namal said Parliament had spent an entire day debating a no-confidence motion against Jayakody, yet all National People’s Power (NPP) MPs voted against it, effectively dismissing the corruption allegations and backing the Minister.

He alleged that the controversial coal procurement process had already cost the country millions, and questioned whether the resignation would address the financial losses incurred.

“Ultimately, it is the consumer who bears the burden of this massive scam,” he said, adding that it remains unclear how the losses would be recovered.

Namal also held President Anura Kumara Dissanayake accountable, accusing him of appointing Jayakody to a key Ministry despite past corruption allegations.

He further claimed that the President continued to protect Jayakody even after investigations were launched, asserting that the Head of State bears direct responsibility for the alleged coal scam and its impact on the public.
