Immigration arrests 22 overstaying Indian nationals from Colombo office

Colombo, April 10 (Daily Mirror) - The Department of Immigration and Emigration arrested 22 Indian nationals who were overstaying their visas at an office in Colombo.

The officials had been observing the suspicious movements of two male Indian nationals last week and questioning them had led to the raiding of a back office of an IT based company.

A senior official from the department’s Investigation Division told the Dailymirror that among the arrested were 17 foreigners overstaying their visit visa, four overstaying their resident visa and another overstaying his business visa.

The arrested males were reportedly in the ages of 25 to 35 years.

They were all transferred to the department’s detention center in Welisara and will be removed from the country shortly.

Meanwhile, 11 Bangladeshi nationals arrested for overstaying their visas had been repatriated last week.

No one is threatening India's existence. That's one difference. Indians overstating are also known for setting up call centers to conduct scams. That's another reason.

Just heard that in UK, people with “no right to remain” are heavily fined and deported asap. We need to do the same here. These people are openly disregarding our laws, clashing with locals, and getting protection from police who are paid with taxpayers’ money!

We should have an agreement to share skilled people so that they can work legally in each others country where such skills are needed. I know many Indians handle IT and other high skill jobs in Colombo. If the Indians start arresting overstaying Sri Lankans, then Tuk Tuk services, domestic workers, shop assistants, factory workers and so in south india will come to a halt.

Obviously this is just the tip of the iceberg. The number absconding after exceeding their allowed days must be 10 or 20 times more. Sri Lanka should follow a foolproof immigration system like Thailand has introduced from May - A Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) and an Electronic Travel Authorisation for Visa exempt visitors AND to report to the nearest Immigration Office when they exceed 60 days, irrespective of their Visa entitlement. Here, once they leave BIA, it's a hide and seek fun activity, inspite of SL being surrounded by sea.
