Hetmyer, Shepherd Power West Indies to Winning T20 World Cup Start

Feb.07 (Mirror Sports) - West Indies began their T20 World Cup campaign with a commanding 35-run victory over Scotland at Eden Gardens, driven by a blistering half-century from Shimron Hetmyer and a match-winning five-wicket haul from Romario Shepherd.

Chasing 183, Scotland slipped early to 37-3 but fought back through captain Richie Berrington, who struck a rapid 42 off 24 balls and shared a 78-run stand with Tom Bruce. However, the chase collapsed once Berrington departed at 115-4.

Shepherd sealed the result in dramatic fashion, ripping through the lower order in the 17th over with four wickets — including a sensational hat-trick — to finish with 5-20.

Earlier, Scotland impressed with the ball after choosing to field, reducing West Indies to 66-2 at halfway. Hetmyer then turned the game on its head, smashing a 22-ball half-century — the fastest by a West Indies batter at a T20 World Cup — on his way to 64, as the Windies surged to 182-5.

Scotland showed spirit but were ultimately outgunned. West Indies next face England in Mumbai, while Scotland meet Italy.
