Heat index alert issued as “caution level” temperatures expected across island

Colombo, April 21 (Daily Mirror) - A widespread heat alert has been issued for almost all provinces, warning that the “feels-like” temperature could rise to caution level during daytime hours across large parts of Sri Lanka.

The advisory covers the Northern, North-Central, North-Western, Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern and Eastern provinces, as well as the Monaragala District.

According to the warning, the heat index, the temperature felt on the human body, is expected to rise significantly, increasing the risk of heat-related illness if precautions are not taken.

Authorities have urged workers at job sites to stay hydrated and take frequent breaks in shaded areas, while households are advised to regularly check on elderly and sick individuals. The public has also been reminded never to leave children unattended inside vehicles.

People engaging in outdoor activities have been advised to reduce strenuous work, seek shade, and maintain proper hydration. Light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing is also recommended to reduce heat exposure.

Officials warn that continued exposure without precautions could lead to serious health impacts, particularly among vulnerable groups.
