Expert committee appointed to prepare framework for energy economy development

Colombo, March 24 (Daily Mirror) - The Cabinet Ministers has approved the appointment of an expert committee to prepare a national framework for developing the energy economy, in line with the Government’s plans to achieve sustainable economic growth.

The Government has identified the energy economy as a priority sector, stressing the need to adopt innovative and forward-looking approaches to ensure long-term stability and growth in the national economy. However, authorities have observed a slowdown in investment in the sector, mainly due to weak integration between key economic sectors.

The importance of creating an integrated economic development framework to build a sustainable economy was highlighted by the President in the 2026 Budget.

Accordingly, the Cabinet approved the proposal submitted by the President to appoint an expert committee under the chairmanship of Hans Wijesuriya to formulate a framework for developing the energy economy in line with national policies, strategies and delivery mechanisms.

The committee is expected to provide recommendations to strengthen coordination among sectors and accelerate investment in the energy economy to support the country’s long-term economic development goals.
