Energy Minister Jayakody granted bail after indictment



Colombo, March 27 (Daily Mirror) - Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody was granted bail by the Colombo High Court after indictments were served against him in a corruption case.

The charges were filed by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption before High Court Judge Rashantha Godawela.

Following the service of indictments, the court ordered Jayakody’s release on two sureties of Rs. 1 million each. The court also directed that his fingerprints be recorded and a report submitted.

According to the indictment, Jayakody allegedly caused a loss of Rs. 8,859,708 to the government in 2016 while serving at the Lanka Fertilizer Company, by granting an undue advantage to a private company during a procurement process.

He has been charged under Section 70 of the Bribery Act for corruption. The case is scheduled for a pre-trial conference on May 6.
