Colombo, May 6 (Daily Mirror) - A Sri Lankan expatriate worker returning from Dubai was arrested by the Customs at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) today for smuggling in a consignment of special double flavoured cigarettes worth over Rs. 4.4 million.
The passenger had reportedly purchased the cigarettes form Dubai and had then travelled to Bahrain before arriving in Sri Lanka on Gulf Air flight GF 144.
The Customs officials at the arrival terminal seized 127 cartons containing 25,400 sticks of cigarettes. This particular brand of cigarettes has two switches that will release two flavours, sources with the Customs said.
The passenger has been identified as a 29-year-old resident of Kurunegala, who has worked in Dubai as a driver.
Sri Lanka Customs has conducted an inquiry into the case and forfeited the cigarettes after imposing a fine of Rs. 100,000.
