Colombo, May 1 (Daily Mirror) - An attempt to smuggle over 3,500 live invasive aquatic organisms from Thailand, which will dangerously affect the local ecosystem if entered, was thwarted when Sri Lanka Customs at the Bandaranaike International Airport seized three natives along with the contraband this morning.
Customs Narcotic Control Unit officials in a joint operation with Customs Biodiversity, Cultural and National Heritage Protection (BCNP) Unit personnel took in for inspection three inbound Sri Lankans with suspicious packages.
The passengers had arrived in the country on SriLankan Airlines flight UL 403 from Bangkok around 10.30 am. Among the passengers were two males aged 31 and 26 years with a female aged 22 years.
Customs spokesperson ADG Seevali Arukgoda said the illegally imported aquatic animals had been classified as the most dangerous and invasive kind and if entered into the Sri Lankan waterways or ecosystems, they could have caused a serious ecological impact to the local species.
The authorities are yet to determine the motive behind this attempt to smuggle such animals into the country.
The seized contraband and suspects were handed over to the Department of Animal Production and Health (DAPH) for further investigations and to be resent to Thailand.
