Chaotic weather grips Sri Lanka with rain and heat warnings

Colombo, April 21 (Daily Mirror) - Sri Lanka is expected to experience a mix of wet and warm conditions, creating a hybrid climate across the island, the Department of Meteorology said.

According to the department, light or heavy rains will occur in most parts of the country after 1.00 p.m., with heavy rainfall of around 100 mm likely in several areas.

These include the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern and North-Western Provinces, as well as the Anuradhapura District.

Furthermore, misty conditions are also expected during the early morning hours in parts of the Central, Sabaragamuwa, North-Central and Uva Provinces, along with the Galle, Matara and Kurunegala Districts.

Meanwhile, the department issued a warm weather advisory for today, warning that the Heat Index or the temperature felt by the human body could rise to ‘caution level’ in 21 districts.

The advisory covers the Northern, North-Central, North-Western, Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern and Eastern Provinces, and the Monaragala District.

People in these areas may experience fatigue with prolonged exposure to heat, while continued physical activity could lead to heat cramps.

As such, authorities have urged the public to take precautions against temporary strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
