Cabinet approves drafting of Digital Economy Bill

Colombo, June 9 (Daily Mirror) - The Cabinet has approved a proposal to draft a Digital Economy Bill aimed at accelerating Sri Lanka’s digital transformation and promoting growth in the digital economy.

According to the Government, a new institutional framework with legal powers is needed to ensure the effective implementation of the National Digital Policy and Guidelines.

Meanwhile, the proposed framework is expected to strengthen policy-making, technology implementation, regulation and enforcement while attracting skilled professionals to the sector.

The Government has also highlighted the importance of continued private sector participation in the country's digital development efforts.

However, the proposed legislation will focus on emerging areas of digital innovation, including artificial intelligence (AI) and related activities.
