Colombo, April 6 (Daily Mirror) - Authorities have intensified islandwide raids targeting price exploitation and hoarding, as concerns grow over potential shortages and price hikes ahead of the upcoming festive season.

Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) Chairman Hemantha Samarakoon said nearly 5,000 raids have been conducted so far in 2026 as part of a special operation aimed at protecting consumers.

Addressing the media, he warned that strict legal action would be taken against black market activities and organised “rice mafia” networks accused of manipulating supply and prices.

“Officials have been instructed to take firm action, particularly against traders who hoard rice and sell it at inflated prices. More than 1,000 successful raids have been conducted since March 20,” he said.

According to the CAA, over 170 traders found guilty of rice-related offences have already been penalised during the crackdown.

The operation has also expanded to address concerns over LP gas availability, with Samarakoon confirming that a new shipment has arrived in the country.

“Distribution is now underway to release stocks to the market without delay. Special teams have been deployed to act against those attempting to create artificial shortages by hoarding gas,” he said.

He further cautioned that global factors, including the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, could drive up prices of certain imported goods, but assured that measures are being taken to maintain steady supplies.

“We are holding continuous discussions with importers, local manufacturers and wholesale suppliers to prevent artificial shortages and ensure consumers are not unfairly affected,” he added.
