Booze banned for three days for this Vesak: Excise Dept

Colombo, May 7 (Daily Mirror) - Countrywide liquor sales will be banned for three days for the upcoming Vesak festival as decided by the Cabinet of Ministers, the Department of Excise announced today.

Therefore, all liquor outlets, bars and taverns will be ordered to remain shut during the three days from May 12, 13 and 14 and all restaurants and tourist hotels are also advised to refrain from selling liquor to its guests.

When contacted, a senior official with the department told the Daily Mirror that although liquor sales are usually prohibited for two days for the Wesak festival, a special Cabinet decision has been taken to prohibit it for an extra day in line with the State Wesak Festival.

The Excise Department notifies all the liquor license holders to strictly follow this ruling and requests from the public to provide information regarding the instances of violations of the Excise Ordinance to its hotline 1913 during this period.

Banning liquor in Restaurants and Tourist Hotels is nonsense. The country needs to boost tourism, and most tourist spend the evenings with beers in Hotels and Restaurants. Closing liquor shops on 12,13 and 14 is absurd and it is too long. Closing on Wesak day is accepted. Moreover what about in Nuwara Eliya? Wesak kalapaya for one week. Do the Government going to ban Liquor for one full week in the Nuwara Eliya district.? Nuwara Eliya, is a Tourist destination. Who is planning these stupid things. Exercise department is loosing Tax on this.

When tourists travel to UK in December, there are public holidays eg 25th Dec, and SHOPS are CLOSED, irrespective of tourists! Enough notice has been given for people to stock up here. We cannot be dancing to the tune to all and sundry! There are some countries where liquor is forbidden. Does it stop tourists? No!
