1,000 cataract patients to receive surgery on March 21–22

Colombo, March 18 (Daily Mirror) - A special programme to restore vision to 1,000 patients suffering from cataracts will be carried out on March 21 and 22, National Eye Hospital Director Dr. Jayaruwan Bandara said.

He said the programme aims to perform cataract surgeries on 1,000 patients who are currently on the waiting list and have lost their vision due to the condition. The project is being implemented by the National Eye Hospital in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Institute of Ophthalmologists.

Dr. Bandara said high-quality intraocular lenses will be provided free of charge to all 1,000 patients, noting that the lenses have been received as a donation from an institution. All other expenses related to the surgeries will be borne by the National Eye Hospital.

He further said that patients have already been selected from the existing waiting list for cataract surgeries and that no new patients will be registered for this special programme.

The Director added that the entire staff, including specialist doctors, medical officers, nurses and supporting staff, will take part in the special surgical programme to ensure its success.
