General Secretary of Bodu Bala Sena Organization, Ven. Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thera, who is being medically treated in Sri Jayewardenepura Hospital under imprisonment, had been issued a light jumper (Liberty Dress), the Prisons sources said.

This dress is said to be given to the prisoners in the hospital.

Accordingly, it is said that he is dressed in a white sarong outside Andanakadaya (Under robe).

Liberty dress includes a white sarong and a white shirt.

A spokesman said that this light dress is issued to the prisoners, who were taken to the hospital and the court but the wearing of the jumper was compulsory when they were imprisoned.

It is reported that this liberty dress had been issued under No W17640 to Gnanasara Thera, who is undergoing medical treatment in the paying ward No.5 of the Sri Jayewardenepura Hospital.

He is under the protection of a jailer and two guards with weapons.

Meanwhile, Prisons Head Quarters said in spite of the fact that he had been sentenced to six years Rigorous Imprisonment; it would be reduced to four years during imprisonment. (Jayantha Samarakone)

So 6 years to 4 years and that 4 years also he will spend in the hospital is it or will the 4 be made zero years soon? Justice is the biggest joke in this country

    Lawry Tuesday, 14 August 2018 11:22 AM

If he was held in prison at least he could have preached yo the other inmates some wisdom as a priest.

    Tony Monday, 13 August 2018 08:03 AM

Why are they reducing his sentence to 4 years now!?!?! If I did what he did would they reduce it like that too? The law is not being enforced on everyone the same way

    Alex Monday, 13 August 2018 08:21 AM

Why flexibility everywhere. Light dress is understood while in hospital but why do you call it a liberty dress,i do not understand. Use of the word liberty within the imprisonment is not appropriate. However he should wear the jumper like others once returned to the cell.

    Sofia Monday, 13 August 2018 10:08 AM

Fr Mathew Peiris wore a jumper, Army Cmdr Foneka wore a jumpeer, Somarama wore a jumper. So why this an issue for any convicted criminal ?

    Jeff Monday, 13 August 2018 09:37 AM

What is this for? just for calling a Tiger a Tiger? BTW Did Badurdheen get any prison sentence for throwing stones at a court?

    kaboos Monday, 13 August 2018 10:09 AM

Jeff do not exhibit your ignorance and your credentials.

    TMA Tuesday, 14 August 2018 05:05 AM

Have you been living under a rock all these years

    Arnold Tuesday, 14 August 2018 05:32 AM

Pls show us the video of Badurdeen throwing stones at the court.

Lord Wolfstein Monday, 13 August 2018 09:46 AM

How can the prison headquarter decide that this fallen monk must serve only 4 out of his 6 years imprisonment? In democratic countries, only a judge can decide on a shortening of the detention if the prisoner performs well, which can not be assumed with this hooligan.

    DillonDP Monday, 13 August 2018 09:50 AM

whilst i laugh at the judgement, one needs to understand the meaning of leberty dress - does it mean freedom to his rear behind bars? or rather in his case at the hospital

    Cobra Monday, 13 August 2018 10:18 AM

They had to stitch a special prison uniform for him because none in stock fit his size!!!

    Cobra Monday, 13 August 2018 10:23 AM

Would DM please show him to us in his new prison 'robe'-he's so photogenic?

    Ashi Monday, 13 August 2018 10:23 AM

These tiny details are not necessary, creates problem and some time arouse the people. Are we seeing this kind of details for any other persons, What is expected of us from knowing this news ? there are so many procedures and change of things in a prison, are we going to get all the latest updates. In summary, I would say irresponsible media.

    Odin Monday, 13 August 2018 10:24 AM

If the Prez gives him a pardon I will never vote for him again, period!

Amarendra Sri Chandragupta Monday, 13 August 2018 03:38 PM

We need a special court for the monks i.e a special religious council for trial of non criminal crimes. There should be alternate sentences as well for non criminal crimes if monks are found to be guilty, not just imprisonment. Our legal system should be reformed to respect and function according to our culture and traditions and not abide by those of the west which were introduced to us by the imperialist.

    WTF Tuesday, 14 August 2018 12:12 PM

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the current legal system we have. The issue is with enforcing it!

    mark Monday, 13 August 2018 03:59 PM

good he deserve the punishment . He had insult the entire Buddhism , the Nation . he should give an example that he is a monk

Sri lankan Monday, 13 August 2018 04:02 PM

Govt is playing with fire. They have forgotten this is a Buddhist country. Appeasement of minorities has gone too far. Next elections people will teach them a good lesson. Wait and see.

    nanda Monday, 13 August 2018 04:08 PM

He was wrong and should be punished for the wrong doing. But was it a crime? If so who is the victim? There are many cases where the punishment is too lenient. But this is too much and he should be pardoned as he had a case although has behavior is incorrect.

    ranjan Monday, 13 August 2018 05:19 PM

so in SL a buddhist can do any crime but he/she cannot be punished. Is that what you mean SRI LANKAN

    Raj Monday, 13 August 2018 05:22 PM

He had done a crime and is being punished. It has nothing to do with minority appeasement.

    laksiri Monday, 13 August 2018 06:55 PM

now Gamarala must stop giving presidential pardon to this criminal

    Appusingho Monday, 13 August 2018 07:00 PM

It's time to teach Buddhism to some monks.

    Ra Tuesday, 14 August 2018 12:54 AM

Being a very Buddhist country, we should not have allowed all this to happend to Gnenasara Thera. The country should not have watched him taken to the prision and treated like this. This also shows that the priest should not have behaved in way to allow all this happen to him.The whole thing is a disgrace to the Sri Lankans, the Buddhist people, to the police and the lawyers and the priest Gnenasara Thera. All this has happened and at this stage we should close and forget everything, make sure that any childish behavier by anybody is not allowed to take place in the future. Please every body forget every thing that happened to a Buddhist Priest.

    SAM Tuesday, 14 August 2018 01:25 PM

Certainly yes. You can sign as the guarantor.

    MMM.A.Waffa Tuesday, 14 August 2018 11:58 AM
