Sri Lanka’s education system is a ‘mongol’ or a retarded version, Justice and Buddhasasana Minister Wijedasa Rajapaksa said today.

He told Parliament that the system was retarded because while some schools have all the facilities several others are without. “When a school is developed by a Provincial Council it is brought under the Central Government,” the minister said.

He said the SAITM Medical College in Malabe was critical of doctors as a whole and the GMOA. “I went to see a specialist recently and was shocked to see how he was treating patients," the minister said, while highlighting the fact that the doctor was treating nine patients at a time.

“I am not saying lawyers are perfect as we have managed to suspend some of them from practicing the profession,” he said speaking about his own profession.

The minister criticised the Government Medical Officers' Association (GMOA) saying they are protesting against SAITM taking advantage of the freedom given by the present regime. “GMOA was silent like kittens during the tenure of former president Mahinda Rajapaksa," he said adding that it was surprising to see Mr. Rajapaksa saying he was against SAITM.

“SAITM was set up during his tenure as president and I don’t know whether to cry or laugh at these hilarious jokes,” he said.

Joint opposition MP Wimal Weerawansa warned that the SAITM might baloon into dangerous proportions if it was not resolved now. He said it might end up with a killing like the case of Thrimawithane who was killed during the conflict over the Ragama Private Medical College.

Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne said certain GMOA members and leading medical practitioners have become examiners of SAITM though many of the doctors were opposing it. (Yohan Perera)

Its high time interested students been given a chance to do their Local Ordinary Level Language in English as well so that they have other opportunities in doing other fields which would be important. At present, its compulsory that they have to either do Sinhala or Tamil to do their Advanced Level and only alternative if they want to do it in English as Medium, have to do the London Ordinary Level exams and pay for it in Pounds.

Has the Govt. selected the right education minister for the first instance?

Kiris Baba Amaray Saturday, 11 February 2017 03:31 PM

Hon. Prime Minister RW should have held the Education Ministry under his control, non-others in this Govt. He is the right person as he is educated.

We should have made Chandrika (CBK) to be the minister of education, it would have been a good choice, as she did more for our children.

Compared to other professions, there does not seem to be a big shortage of doctors in this country. Walk 1 km down any lane, and count the number of dispensaries that you come across. May be there is maldistribution. It would be bad human resource management to focus on producing more doctors. Focus should be on other professions where there are severe shortages of manpower.

When "CERN" is interested in initiating activities in SL, this highly global thinker prefer to make broader statement, It's a miracle that the SL education system is preserve with all the drawback of the island, It's pity the island was never blessed with political intellectual society.

There certainly must be problems with Sri Lanka's higher education system if its own Cabinet Ministers can't find more appropriate vocabulary choices to describe its education system. "Mongol" as a synonym for "retarded" is about as dated, inappropriate, offensive, and unenlightened word choice I could possibly imagine a government official using. Instead of alienating and insulting people who live with Down's Syndrome, pick up a thesaurus.

"Doctor was treating nine patients at a time" indicates that the country needs more medical practitioners. This is why we need private sector involvement in creating more doctors to meet the demand, since so far publicly funded medical schools have failed to create enough medical doctors.

YES GOOD EXAMPLE IS HE HISELF AS DOUBLE MONGOL. until now what he did to our justice system?and protecting thives and thugs

    Daham Saturday, 11 February 2017 12:53 AM

If the Sri Lanka’s education system is a ‘mongol’, It is the politicians themselves to be blamed for bringing the education system to such abysmal level.

    Diogenes Saturday, 11 February 2017 06:42 PM

You are also a result of that type of education!

    Dot Saturday, 11 February 2017 03:56 AM

Mongol retarded vision ..Dear Minister do not use out of date phrases .We do not classify people as Mongols or retarded so this metaphor to make your thoughts clear is just out of step in this modern day language discourse and would be insulting those of the differently able due to birth circumstances .and they too are educated today .. We have to chose our words wisely to project our own education in todays world ..

    MP Saturday, 11 February 2017 08:06 AM

When Mongols are ruling, it is natural to have a "Mongol Education System".

What about the justice system ? Leave Education to Akila but correct your own ministry with more courts and expedite the backlog of cases. Your poking into other areas is one reason for delay in not doing your given job.

Increase intake on Merit to Government Universities to 65% and up the cut off for Medical to at least 3 Credit passes. There are some Doctors who have come with only 3 Simple passes in Government Medical Colleges.
