MP Geetha Kumarasinghe said today she would file a case in the Supreme Court against the Appeal Court’s ruling which deprived her from her seat in Parliament.

The Court of Appeal today ruled that Ms. Kumarasinghe was disqualified to be a Member of Parliament on the basis that she holds dual citizenship.

She said she hoped to continue as an MP until a decision was given by the Supreme Court following her petition.

“I’m not criticizing the court ruling but I regret it. I hope justice will prevail one day. I will seek further judicial assistance in this regard,” she told Daily Mirror. (Darshana Sanjeewa)

Mahendran was not holding a post in Parliament but employed as Central Bank Governor. The country can bring in legislation not to allow foreign nationals to hold any government jobs and only Sri Lankan nationals. But the otherside of this is that we only have fools left over in this country, the cream of educated have left overseas and are holding foreign citizenship.

Thondaman does not have dual citizenship, he has OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) which is only PR status without voting rights, similar to Gota holding green card.

It is an open-shut case. Like olden days of first parliament, she should be fined for sitting in Parliament when disqualified to hold a seat. In fact the EC should have rejected her but if a false declaration was given then a further sentance of a fine or jail should follow.

    BuffaloaCitizen Wednesday, 03 May 2017 02:19 PM

She can be taken for contempt of court on this statement when she states "to continue as an MP until a decision was given by the Supreme Court". The Appeals court has made a direction and she needs to observe this until the Supreme Court reverses such a decision (which is highly unlikely).
