New York (dpa) - Iran and the United States should discuss a prisoner swap, President Hassan Rowhani said.

"If we can help free folks who are detained there and they can take reciprocal steps, we'd welcome that approach," he said at a reception for Middle East experts held by the Iranian mission to the United Nations late Sunday, the Washington Post reported.

Rowhani was in New York for his address to the United Nations General Assembly on Saturday.

Iran is holding three US citizens, including a correspondent of the Washington Post accused of spying for the US and propaganda against Iran.

The US has imprisoned 19 Iranians in connection with violations of the sanctions against Iran over its nuclear programme.
