A Wildlife officer opened fire at a she-elephant in self-defence when the elephant tried to attack a backhoe after it was saved from drowning in an abandoned well at Kombuwaittakulam in Omanthai. However, three separate investigations were launched by the Police, the Wildlife Conservation Department and the Ministry of Sustainable Development and Wildlife into the incident.
