An elephant and a calf had fallen into the canal of Welikanda Z-D on Monday. The two animals were rescued in a lengthy operation carried out by the Wildlife officials with the assistance of residents.
The calf had been released to the forest reserve of Muthuwella Monday night itself. However, the other elephant had been rescued on Tuesday.
