Exports down; trade gap widens

Sri Lanka's trade gap widened 19.2 percent Year-on-Year (YoY) in the month of April to US $ 825.4 million amid slowing down of exports
earnings by 6.87 percent YoY to US $ 696.6 million.

The import expenditure during the month rose 5.7 percent to US $ 1.5 billion, mainly resulted by increased expenditure on consumer goods,
which went up 12.7 percent YoY to US $ 272.7 million.

However, the trade deficit in the first four months of 2013 has fallen 14.6 percent YoY to US $ 2.9 billion.
