The annual Governor’s Trophy Six-a-Side Cricket Tournament that brings together Sri Lanka’s robust banking and finance sector will be played on October 11 and 12 at the P. Sara (Oval) Stadium.  Labelled as the most coveted event of the banking and finance industry, Governor’s Trophy is organized by the Credit Information Bureau of Sri Lanka (CRIB).
A record 113 teams are battling for honours this year in both men’s and women’s divisions.  74 men’s teams will compete for the Governor’s Trophy while 39 will vie in the women’s division.  68 teams contested the inaugural tournament in 2012.
“The all-important banking and finance industry didn’t have any event that brought the industry together and the Governor’s Trophy fills that void.  In fact, the response has been phenomenal and the record number of teams in both men’s and women’s divisions prove the event’s emergence as the showpiece event of the industry”, says Gamini Karunaratne, Director/General Manager of CRIB.
The six-a-side softball tournament is played for a series of trophies and cash awards and will be conducted in accordance to international softball cricket standards.  The official draw is slated to be held on September 30 with representations of all teams.
Beginning this year, a new trophy has been introduced pitting CEOs of banks against CEOs of non-banking finance institutions, creating further interest in the gala two-day event.  Traditionally, the Governor of the Central Bank presents the trophy to the ultimate winners.
