Sri Lanka Men finish 14th in Rugby Sevens

The Sri Lanka Men’s Rugby Sevens team settled for the 14th out of 16 teams at the Commonwealth Games, on Sunday.

However, the Tuskers narrowly missed out the chance of securing the 13th place at the competition after going down to Jamaica 24-26 in a close playoff encounter at the Coventry Stadium in Birmingham, England, after the scores were level 12-12 at half time.

Mithun Hapugoda, Ravindu Hettiarachchi, Nigel Ratwatte and Buddhima Nanayakkara scored a try each for Sri Lanka with Hapugoda and Ratwatte converting one try each.

Mason Caton-Brown scored two tries while Oshane Edie and Ashley Simon scored a try each for Jamaica with Lucas Roy-Smith converting three tries.

Meanwhile, the Sri Lanka Women’s Team was pushed to last place after they suffered another massive 00-52 defeat at the hands of South Africa in their playoff match played at the same venue.

The winners collected their points from eight tries and six conversions after having led 33-00 at half time.

Felicia Jacobs (3), Zandile Masuku (2) and Liske Lategan (3) did the scoring for South Africa with Donelle Snyders converting four tries and Nontuthuko Shongwe converting two tries. By Susil Premalal - Reporting from Birmingham
