Difference between precept and practice

The appointment of political favorites as envoys to our diplomatic missions abroad came under severe flak during the previous regime.

The civil society organizations in particular charged that close friends and family members of political bigwigs were being appointed as our ambassadors while confining the career- diplomats in the country’s foreign service to desk-bound work at the Foreign Ministry.

A certain ‘transparent’ NGO had been among those highly critical of “putting political henchmen on the diplomatic gravy train”.

The latest news is that the head of the ‘transparent’ body that had been attacking the government for loading the foreign service with political appointees himself has got an appointment as an envoy of a mission abroad.

In fact, he is said to have been appointed to head our mission in a large country described as a continent!
