Lanka’s internet and email subscribers grow

The number of internet and email subscribers in Sri Lanka increased by 77.3% Year-on-Year (YOY) during the second quarter of this year reaching approximately 1.15 million subscribers according to the latest economic indicators report from the Central Bank of Sri Lanka.

The number of cellular phones in the country also saw a minor 6% increase reaching a figure of 19.27 million during the half.

Meanwhile, fixed line telephones decreased by 3.5% to reach 3.43 million phones during the same period.In terms of telephone density, including mobile phones, Sri Lanka currently is in the ratio of 112 telephones to every 100 people, up from 104 phones for every 100 people in the previous year. Excluding cellular phones, telephone density is estimated at 16.9 phones for every 100 citizens, dropping slightly from 17 phones for every 100 individuals in the same quarter last year.The number of public payphones in the country also continued to drop, decreasing by 10.8% to 7,035 this year.
