Emergency Calls launches total care facility for special needs patients

Emergency Calls (Pvt.) Ltd, a leading emergency medical services and ambulance service provider, recently launched a first-of-its-kind complete care facility in Rajagiriya for patients with special medical needs. The centre was declared open following religious observances.

Providing hospice care facilities, a type of care that focuses on the terminally ill or seriously ill patients, the Emergency Calls facility in Rajagiriya can house up to 10 patients at a time who need special attention and care. With trained doctors and nursing staff on-call and all facilities provided, the centre hopes to lend a helping hand to families that want personalized care and attention for their loved ones in a comfortable setting. Families can choose from air-conditioned or non-air conditioned rooms, while the facility also provides medically specified diets, intravenous feeding facilities, specialists and therapist’s service and an environment that caters to a patient’s emotional and spiritual needs.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Emergency Calls proprietor Dr. Amarajeeva said, “The story of emergency calls dates back to when as a young practitioner in Moratuwa I was called to check on a lady who was seriously ill and thought to be breathing her last. On my arrival, there I examined the patient and realized that she could be saved. After performing lifesaving procedures, we were able to revive her and since then our clinic has been saving many lives. We were heavily involved in transporting war casualties from the Ratmalana airport and being on call during the dark days of this nation. The launch of this second facility in Rajagiriya takes our services a step further and extends our care for long-term patients.”

The facility in Rajagiriya has the ability to house 10 patients at any given time. Three of the rooms are fully air-conditioned while the rest come with individual ceiling fans and sinks, cupboards for storage and personal care and attention from well-trained staff. A television lounge for leisure time, library of books and a prayer space conforming to all religions ensure that any patient regardless of their background and lifestyle is well taken care of. Patients who need to see their physicians or have lab tests taken outside of the facility are transported in the Emergency Calls ambulances while visiting hours are flexible so that family and friends can always be at the patient’s side.

Dr. Amarajeeva also noted, “The facility in Rajagiriya is not an elder’s home or special needs home where uncaring families can forget their loved ones. Our attempt is to make life easier for families who have such loved ones with special needs and share the burden. This is why we encourage family and friends to visit often and even help out in the care of their loved ones so that the patient is also comfortable and emotionally taken care of.”
