The Kerala Samajam of Sri Lanka along with the Kerala Vanitha Samajam is organizing a function “Onam 2013 celebrations” at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute, 100 Independence Square, Colombo 7 on October 12, 2013 from 5.30pm onwards. The celebrations would include a cultural programme consisting of traditional Kerala dance items followed by dinner.

This function is organized to celebrate “Onam’, the largest and the most important festival of Kerala, India.  Onam is celebrated by all Keralites irrespective of castes and creed, during the zodiacal month of Leo (chingam). Though it is a harvest festival of the people of Kerala, it has over the years developed into a national event celebrated by all Keralites wherever they may be.

Legend connects Onam to the return to earth of King Mahabali, the pious and benevolent ruler of ancient Kerala, who was banished to the netherworld by God Vishnu. The people of Kerala celebrate annually to receive this King, whose rule was known for Justice and Equality.

The Kerala Samajam of Sri Lanka and the Kerala Vanitha Samajam are organisations formed by people of Kerala origin in Sri Lanka and have been in existence from 1959. Both organisations are involved in Social, Cultural and Educational activities in Sri Lanka.  Tickets will available at the venue entrance.
