One of the issues hitting the headlines these days is the possibility of China’s Coronavirus affecting Sri Lanka also. Various preventive strategies have been put in place by the authorities at airports and by SriLankan Airlines with various pre-emptive strategies.

The strategies put in place by the Health Authorities in eliminating Malaria and preventing recurrence would also come into play, to automatically isolate any person with even a hint of the disease.

However, there is the possibility of the Virus coming into the country from non-human sources such as from imported packages, vehicles and even the aircraft. There is also the possibility of the virus being blown in by the winds.

Therefore perhaps there is an even better option - Increasing our Body’s Immunity. We highlight an article by Dr Joseph Mercola (mercola.com) – a popular newsletter on health and wellness. It is edited to suit the topic and our local conditions.

The article is about the power to prevent viral illnesses by the famous Ayurvedic Herb – Holy Basil or Thulasi in Tamil and Maduruthala in Sinhala. The herb is venerated by Hindus.

It is a common herb that grows in most parts of Sri Lanka is readily available and therefore easily administered – just by eating the raw leaves in a salad or sambol– about five leaves by adults and about three by children under 12.

A Sri Lankan agricultural expert says he and his wife eat these leaves every day and so far have not had an attack of any viral infection for perhaps the last 12 years.

The stimulating powers of Thulasi have been recognised by ancient healers and sages. It is a part of their households, typically grown in earthen pots in the family home or garden.

One of the most important reasons why it is so famous, aside from the fragrant flavour as a Basil type cooking herb, is that it is one of the most efficacious adaptogens- an agent that helps your body adapt more efficiently to stress caused by diseases- ever known.

But Thulasi also has another beneficial side effect, and that is helping to prevent and treat viral diseases such as influenza, dengue, chikungunya and therefore the Corona Virus, experts say.

According to Dr Mercola’s article, Thulasi may:

These benefits may stem from Thulasi’s highly complex, unique chemistry. It contains beneficial compounds called phytochemicals - naturally occurring compounds that plants produce to protect themselves against bacteria, viruses and fungi - that interact and have strong anti-oxidant, anti-viral, anti-bacterial and immune-enhancing properties that promote general health and maintain your body’s natural defence against viruses, stress and disease, experts say.

If you are concerned about influenza, dengue or any other viral disease experts recommend trying Thulasi over any of the flu drugs or vaccines now being offered.
