There is delay in finalising 4,000 files due to the vacancies existing in the Government Analyst’s Department which has also caused the delay in judgements, Former Secretary of the Ministry of Justice and present Secretary of  the Public Services, Provincial Councils and Local Government Ministry  J.J. Rathnasiri said.

He said that, as a result,  the cases were pending against 6,000 people who were  now in remand prisons and said that at present there were  26,000 inmates in 31 prisons in the country where only 12,000 could be accommodated.   “Steps have been taken to fill 27 posts of  93 vacant posts,’ he said.
