Sri Lankan government should decide against signing the proposed Millennium Challenge Corporation Agreement (MCC agreement) with the USA now using the situation with regard to Army Commander Shavendra Silva who has been denied entry into that country, a UNP MP said today.

UNP MP Hirunika Premachandra told a press conference that Sri Lanka could use this moment in deciding on giving up considering the MCC agreement if it really does not want to sign it. “The present government spoke against the MCC agreement during the presidential election. Therefore, this is an opportune time for the government to decide against signing the agreement if it really does not want to sign it,” Ms Premachandra said.

At the same time, the matter should be resolved through diplomatic means rather than through arrogance.
