Several fish in Nuwara Wewa in Anuradhapura have been dying for the last several days much to the anxiety of the residents of the area. Shoals of fish had died and lashed to the bank creating an eyesore. Residents of the area pointed out that the nauseating smell from dead fish had resulted in a health hazard. They expressed concern about the environmental pollution caused to the reservoir that was the main water resource of the drinking water supply to the town.

Senior Lecturer of the Bio Science Department in the Rajarata University Wasantha Sena Welianga said unscrupulous fishermen using dynamite to harvest fish had caused contamination of water that resulted in the death of fish.
