The manager of a leading rice producing company in Sinhapura in Welikanda who was produced in court on behalf of the company charged with storing rice unfit for consumption was released by Polonnaruwa Magistrate Asela De Silva, on personal bail of Rs.100,000 with two sureties each.

A team of investigating officers from the Colombo Consumer Affairs Authority and the Polonnaruwa District Consumer Affairs Authority had carried out the raid on information from the public that the company was in possession of a stock of rice deemed unfit for human consumption ready for release to the market.

The CAA had charged the company for marketing rice unfit for human consumption, indicating the date of manufacture and the expiry date, and selling rice in excesses of the
controlled price.

The court ordered the CAA to seal the stores containing the rice unfit for human consumption and to separate them from the stocks fit for distribution under the supervision of the Public Health Inspectors within two weeks.
