UNP former MP Daya Gamage yesterday urged the government to distribute the Rs 5000 concession to needy people at least four times a month so that they get Rs 20,000. Mr Gamage told a press conference that the Rs 5000 which is currently paid is hardly sufficient.

“ The sum of Rs 5000 is hardly sufficient given the current economic situation in the country and the needy people who depend on daily wages,” he said.

Also Mr Gamage said the apparel industry in Sri Lanka had come to a standstill. “ I am also a owner of an apparel factory and therefore I am fully aware of the situation” he said. He said payments have not been received for some of the orders which have been dispatched weeks ago.

Also he said even other industries have suffered losses due to COVID-19 pandemic.
