A Police Constable (PC) was killed last night following a shooting incident that took place during a raid in Akuressa, police said.
The raid was conducted based on information received by the Akuressa Police that an individual was in possession of an illegal firearm.
Investigations revealed that the PC was shot at by the suspect when a police team attempted to arrest him. Police said the suspect had escaped with the gun to the thicket near his house.
The PC was killed on admission to the Handapana Hospital in Kamburupitiya.
A special operation was conducted in search of the suspect.
