OVER 1, 600 JOIN THE ARMY FROM JAFFNA: COMMANDER

Army Commander Gen. Shavendra Silva said over 1,600 young men and women from Jaffna had joined the Sri Lanka Army during the last three months.

Addressing a ceremony at the Jaffna Security Force Headquarters to convey his New Year greetings to the soldiers engaged in an arduous task to protect the people from the coronavirus pandemic he said it was a great achievement that young men and women in the north joined the army despite interference of the separatist elements. The army commander commended the services of more than 7,000 army and navy personnel who were providing facilities to the public to follow quarantine process. “This endeavour has not yet come to an end. The security forces deserve the respect of the entire nation for their services. Jaffna peninsula has been the focus of attention of the nation and the foreign counties as well,” he further said. He paid a tribute to the 13 army personal including Lt. Vaas Gunawardene who were killed in the first LTTE attack on the army at Thirunelveli and all others who laid down their lives to create the peaceful atmosphere prevailing today.
