Marking the International Women’s Day as a day of mourning, women of the Northern and Eastern provinces organised a protest march in Mullaitivu calling for international intervention to find out what happened to those who disappeared during the war.

“If the government respected the rights of women, it should allow international bodies to carry out an investigation on the disappeared,” the protestors said.

They said their husbands had disappeared during the war and the investigations had not made much progress. They said they would not give up their struggle until the government intervened.   The participants of the protests wore black as a sign of their resistance. Many civil rights groups also took part in the protest, which was held
on Monday.
