Catholic MPs representing the ruling party on Wednesday urged the government to reveal who were responsible for the incidents regarding the stoning of St. Sebastian’s statue in Katuwapitiya and the disappearance of St Anthony’s statue from a church in Munnakare during the past two days alleging that there were persons who wanted to create religious unrest in the country.

UNP MPs Hector Appuhamy and Dr. Kavinda Jayawardene who raised the issue in the House called for quick action to nab the wrongdoers.

MP Appuhamy said the groups who wanted religious unrest in the country were behind the attack on the statue of St Sebastian in Katuwapitiya. “Creating a fear psychosis could be another objective of the attack,” he said.

Dr. Jayawardene said another incident was reported from Munnakare in Negombo on Tuesday where a statue of St. Anthony had gone missing. “It seems that the objective of these incidents was to create unrest among religious groups. Those who were behind these incidents should be arrested forthwith,” the MP said.
