Hakmana accident; Police Sergeant succumbs to his injuries

The 47-year-old Police Sergeant who was critically injured in the accident in which a tipper truck ran over a group of police officers last month on the Matara-Hakmana road, succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment in hospital yesterday. 


Three police officers who were on duty at a roadblock on the Matara-Hakmana road were run over by the tipper truck, killing a police constable on July 13.   


The 36-year-old Constable attached to the Hakmana Police, died on the spot while the other two critically injured police officers were undergoing treatment at the Matara Hospital.   
Police said the Police Sergeant attached to the Hakmana Police was a resident of Kirinda. The driver of the truck was arrested and remanded by the Matara Magistrate.   
Earlier, Police said that cases would be filed against drivers involved in fatal accidents due to negligence and reckless driving, after consulting the Attorney General.   
They said the driver involved in the Hakmana accident will also be charged with murder.
