Chairman Election Commission Mahinda Deshapriya said fasting in any form is prohibited from midnight yesterday (13), with the end of time allowed for election campaigns.
In a letter, the Election Commission has directed Acting IGP not to allow anyone to engage in fasting or other types of protests during the silent period of the election.
Further, going into detail at the press conference held yesterday (13) at the Government Information Department, he said the fasting held by individuals participating intermittently may affect some candidate adversely while being a favourable gain for some candidates.

There may be possibilities of interruption of the election process in an event of a protester falling sick during such fasting.
