Child poisoned by mother's paramour

A young man who had allegedly given poison to his paramour’s ten-year-old son in an attempt to kill him was produced before the Nawalapitiya magistrate Chandani Meegoda and remanded till December 6.

The child had been admitted to the Kotmale Hospital in a serious condition after drinking a poisonous soft drink given to him by the suspect. And later transferred to the Gampola base hospital. The suspect and the child’s mother who fled from the area after the incident were arrested by the Kotmale police.

Investigations revealed that the suspect who considered the boy an obstacle to his relations with the woman had decided to kill him. The suspect woman was a resident of Gerandiella in Ramboda and her lover a resident of Katugastota.

The 40-year-old woman was a mother of three children and her two elder daughters were married and settled in other areas. It is alleged that she had been in love with the 30-year-old young man. Samples of the drink taken by the child were referred to the government analyst for obtaining a report.
