Professor Priyantha Yapa of the Agricultural Faculty in the Sabaragamuwa University said that the CORONA virus in dead bodies could be live even for hundred years, if buried.

He told the media at Pilimatalawa yesterday that similar viruses including Ebola, Polio and Spanish Fever had been found germinating after hundreds of years when emerged from the ground. He pointed out that no medical scientist had yet confirmed that the CORONA virus in dead bodies would be sterile when buried.

Professor Yapa warned that future generations would face a serious health hazard if the CORONA virus in dead bodies, that would be more ruinous than nuclear weapons, was allowed to emerge.

“Mankind has been facing a serious threat due to the COVID-19 pandemic that ravaged even through the powerful nations. Burial of bodies of CORONA victims has been gathering momentum as a religious issue. However, the virulent disease is spreading regardless of communal or religious differences. French scientists had discovered that a virus buried for 30,000 years was active when exposed to environmental conditions. The Polio virus had been found in garbage collections and the Spanish fever virus underground,” he said.

He further said the genetic conditions of the virus and the environmental conditions including temperature, ratio of ground water and carbonic elements were the deciding factors of activating a virus buried underground.
