Another wild elephant in the North Western Wildlife Zone had been shot dead and its carcass lying in the rear of a home garden in Dandubeniruppa in Galeweala was recovered by the Wildlife Conservators.   Veterinary Surgeon of the North Western Wildlife Zone Dr. Isuru Weerakkoday who visited the scene on information from Galewela Wildlife Officer performed the autopsy  and had found several  pellets penetrating the skull and other parts of the body of the jumbo. Dr. Weerakkoday confirmed that the wild elephant had been shot dead.

The Wildlife Conservators had to use a backhoe  to conduct the autopsy.

Residents of the area said herds of wild elephants frequented the area constantly and their continual

representations to erect an electric fence fell on the deaf ear of the authorities. However they expressed concern about killing of wild elephants despite the threat  faced from them.
