Colombo YMBA Awards Ceremony 2019: Over 500 Undergraduates & A/L Students receive Scholarships

The Colombo YMBA Scholarship Awards Ceremony was successfully concluded recently at the Colombo YMBA main hall.  
447 bright and deserving Undergraduates attached to State Universities in various faculties of the Sabaragamuwa, Peradeniya, Ruhuna, Rajarata, Wayamba, Uva-Wellassa, Eastern University, Moratuwa, Jaffna, Ampara, Colombo, Kelaniya and Sri Jayawardenapura, who are from lower income Samurdhi recipient families were the recipients.  
75 GCE A/L Students attached to neighbouring Schools of the Colombo YMBA Borella namely Gothami Balika Vidyalaya, Yashodara Balika Vidyalaya, Susamayawardhana Vidyalaya, D.S. Senanayake College, Ratnavali Balika Vidyalaya Devi Balika Vidyalaya, Ananda Balika Vidyalaya, Ananda College, Nalanda College as well as students of Kataragama Vidyalaya, Sella Kataragama Vidyalaya and Welioya Sampath Nuwara Jathikapasala were awarded Scholarships on the basis of recommendations received from the Principals of the respective schools.  
Total value of the Scholarships covering 2019 awards amounted to Rs 11.60 million.  
The Chief Guest for this year’s ceremony was Emeritus Professor Kusuma Karunaratne from the University of Colombo. The Special Guest of Honour was Mr Dhammika Attygalle, Director, Upali Group of Companies and Basnayake Nilame of the Kelaniya Rajamaha Viharaya. Mr Dhammika Attygalle is also a close relation of the Late Dr D.J. Attygalle, the main Sponsor for the Scholarship Funding carried out by the Colombo YMBA annually.

The function was organized under the leadership of the President of the Colombo YMBA Deshabandu Tilak de Zoysa, current acting President Mr M. Ariyaratne, Mr Mahendra Jayasekara Hon. General Secretary, Mr Anura Serasingha Branch Secretary and other members of the Trust Funds and Skills Development Committee of the Colombo YMBA.  
 Major funding for Scholarship Awards were received from Trust Funds established by the Colombo YMBA based on substantial donations received from various distinguished personalities over several decades. 
Trust Funds that were established are Dr D.J. Attygalle Property Trust Fund, Ajita de Zoysa Trust Fund, Matilda Hewavisenthi Trust Fund, Sir Baron Jayatilaka Trust Fund, Sir Cyril de Zoysa Trust Fund, L.R. Goonetilleke Trust Fund, Welcome Break UK Tsunami Trust Fund, Erick Amarasinghe Trust Fund, Dr D.P. Athukorale Trust Fund, D.S.P.S de Silva Trust Fund, D.D.M. Simon Silva Trust Fund, Shrima Jayasekara Tsunami Trust Fund, Solomon Abeyasekara Trust Fund, Sidath Sri Nanadalochana Trust Fund, A.L.D.A. Jayawardena Trust Fund, Seetha Athukorale Trust Fund, Deshabandu Tilak de Zoysa Trust Fund, Mr Irwin Weerakkody Trust Fund, Dr Prithraj Peiris Trust Fund, S.L. Gunasekara Trust Fund as well as valuable donations received from Individual Sponsors based in Sri Lanka and overseas to support these bright and deserving students following various degree courses and A/L classes.
